Val Nelson Collection

Mrs Val Nelson remembers:

'During the 1980's 2nd Hellesdon Scout Group used to enter a float in the Procession most years, with the help of Notcutts Garden Centre who sponsored us and supplied the lorry and driver from their Woodbridge depot (and a fine driver he was).

The lorry used to arrive early Saturday morning, and was set upon by scouters, parents (and scouts if we could pin them down). The cub packs used to paint scenery and cut shapes and sort out the theme. The hard work was putting it together on the day.

'The Story of the Canaries' float in 1986 shows our 'claim to fame' - we won all the trophies in the non commercial section...we were really proud.

Our bucket shakers used to be brilliant as well. They collected at the back of the crowds, in the pubs and anywhere that looked promising. The man from the City of Norwich Lions (who used to collect up all the money at the end of the Procession) used to comment on how many notes they had managed to collect.

My other memory is the ride back to Notcutts, with everyone on board. At one point they used to send us via the front of City Hall and then up Little Bethel Street. That tiny street - I wondered how the driver managed it'
