Photographs of Sylvia McDonnell's mother, father and grandfather in costume for Northampton Carnival.

Sylvia's grandfather was called John Barnes and was the father of Dorothy Barnes. Dorothy Barnes married George Haynes and they are the parents of Sylvia McDonnell.

The collection also contains a script for a dramatic performance about the history of Northampton which was performed at the Northampton Pageant, which the carnival was part of.

Northampton Festival Manufacturers' Trades Exhibition - Carnival and Pageant.

May 26th - 31st 1930 (Monday - Saturday).

The festival was held daily at Abington park. The Exhibition was opened each morning and the Carnival each afternoon, the opening ceremonies being performed by a different dignitary every time.

The historical pageant was produced by Nugent Monk and was performed every evening with matinees on Tuesday and Saturday at 2.30pm.

Daily attractions were concerts, sideshows and dancing.

HRH The Duke of York came to Northampton on Tuesday 26th May and after a morning of visits to several places in town he was driven to Abington Park, after lunch at the Guildhall, to open the day's carnival.

The Mayor later received a letter of thanks from HRH.

the Festival was a great success and all proceeds from the week's events were given to local charities.

George Haynes and Dorothy Barnes were part of the display given by members of the YMCA and Church Lads' Brigade on Monday evening.
