Isle of Wight trip

This was an Arts Council Touring funded project to take a community based carnival group to the Isle of Wight carnivasl. It involved the Phoenix Children Centre based in Mile Cross, Norwich.
The volunteers and children from the Centre all learned how to design and construct costumes. They chose the theme of 'Fire' for their costumes to fit in with the name of their centre. 15 of the chidren also learned how to walk using stilts.
The group also learned how to plan and implement a small tour with the Carnival Group leaders and members including budgeting, booking, accommodation, transport, music systems and programming.
40 children and adults were involved in the project.
At the carnival the group stayed on a campsite where small adjustments to the costumes were made. Stilt-walkers practised on the hilly paths around the camp site (rather different to the flat landscape of Norfolk).
The group won first prize in the Sandown Illuminated Procession.
