Description

Stories and story characters are often the inspiration for themes for school carnival costumes. The well known character Anansi from popular folk stories from Caribbean, America and Africa has frequently been taken as theme for costumes. This is a class banner announcing the class theme for carnival. The banner has been made by children working with Karen Mears using flour resist technique which she uses instead of wax resist which can be dangerous with young children because of the use of hot wax.
Using a flour resist is also a traditional technique in dyed textiles across West Africa and children studied some examples before making their own designs.
