Lambeth and Wandsworth schools carnival projects have emphasised children's agency in all the processes of carnival. So children have designed and made their own costumes. Teachers usually chose themes that relate to curriculum topics as in this instance the topic was Fire. The children then made costumes linked to their understanding of their subject whether it be maths or geography.
The costumes in this class band used the effective device of repeating a simple flame shape to make both headpiece, collar and standard so that when all children moved together the flames really created the impession of a dancing fire.
