Description

Nadella Benjamin, carnival mas designer from Trinidad, worked with this Lambeth school to create a school carnival, She supported children and staff through the processes which are essential to understanding a mas camp and how costumes are arrived at. The class were working on the topic Ancient African civilisations. Nadella asked children for their suggestions and helped them think about creating section costumes based ancient African kingdoms from South Africa and Ghana. The children used recycled materials like cardboard to construct their costumes. Use of recyclables and other materials that come to hand including natural materials is a common practice in schools carnivals in Uk and Trinidad and Tobago, partly for reasons of money and partly for ecological reasons.
