St Patrick’s Festival 2007
Friday, March 16th- Friday23rd March
It’s St Patrick’s Day on Saturday, and Luton Irish Forum has an eight-day extravaganza of celebration lined up.
This year’s festival will kick off with a Gaelic football match between St Patrick’s boys band, who will be visiting from Portalington and the local Junior team St Dympna’s.
The event is being organised by Hearts County Board, and the throw in will take place at 4pm at St Joseph’s field, Gardenia Avenue.
The evening of the launch will begin at 7pm on Friday with the customary Sean O’Riada Mass, featuring LIF’s own choir; performing hymns in Gaelic. The Festival will be formally opened, by the Luton Mayor Julian Wates, in St Joseph’s Parish Centre.
St Patrick’s Day itself will begin with the annual church service at Our Lady help of Christians, in Castle Street, at 9am.
From 10am, Manor Road will be home to a theme ‘The Life of St Patrick’. In preparation for the event, LIF has been giving storytelling workshops on the theme to Primary Schools, as well as working with Luton Carnival Arts Development Trust and pupils from St Margaret’s  of Scotland and Cardinal Newman schools.
As a result is a flamboyant display of costumes, choreography and Celtic images which will be accompanied by presentation of traditional Irish musicians.
Other festival events include three consecutive nights of entertainment at The Library Theatre.
A film, The Wind that Shakes the Barley, will be shown on Wednesday March 21 (Tickets cost £5, and there will be two showings- one at 11am, another at 7.30pm).
The following evening there will be Irish music from the Fabulous Duffy Brothers who will be supported by international harpist and singer Margaret Knight and the Conway Lally School of Dance 9tickets cost £7.50, while the concert starts at 7.30pm).
