Northampton Carnival Route May Change, 20th November 1969

Slight changes may ve made in the route of Northampton Carnival next year, it was announced this week when the carnival committee met to hand over the proceeds of this year's event to charities.

The chairman, Alderman E. F. Tompkins, said that the size of the carnival had presented problems for many years, but he added: "I think we shall resolve our problems".

The secretary, Mr. R.C.T. Dyer reported that the amount collected along the route this year was £2,141 - all within just over two hours.

There were just over 300 entries in the procession which was made up of between 3,200 and 3,300 people. Spectators numbered between 70,000 and 80,000.

Altogether, £1,705 was handed over in donations, of which the largest amount, £400, went to Northampton General Hospital towards the cost of a new organ.

The Mayor of Northampton, Alderman John Poole, who received a cheque for £50 towards his Fund for the Bedridden complimented the committee on its work.
