Death of a Carnival Character

One of the perennial characters of Northampton's Carnival Parade, Mr. Frederick James Higginson, a trick cyclist has died aged 81.

Mr. Higginson, who had been appearing in the popular Northampton parade on a variety of weird home-made machines since the 1930s, was a cycle repairer by trade, carrying on business first in Grafton Street and then in Upppingham Street.

His last appearance in public on one of his cycles was in the London Easter Parade last year.

It is very much a family tradition, for his son, Mr. Frederick (Len) Higginson, who is carrying on the business, grandson, Michael, and his grand daughter, Mrs. Sandra Mills, also ride similar machines in parades.

And there is every chance that great grand daughter, Kerry Mills, aged six, will soon be joining the family turn out.

The funeral service for Mr. Higginson, a widower, who lived at 25 Harding Street, Northampton, was held yesterday at Milton Crematorium.
